So, yesterday was my 26 week appointment with my OB - also known as the meet and greet. I'm not sure what I was expecting - the receptionist, and nurses were all very friendly. They had a pre-admission package for me to fill out, to help us save time when I go into labour. My glucose was normal, weight gain was only 4 or so pounds (bringing the total to under 10 pounds!) and blood pressure was low, as always.
The OB was friendly enough, but I felt rushed. I'm so used to my family doctor, who takes the time to address my concerns etc, that it was a bit of a culture shock moving to an obviously busy OB who probably won't take the time to get to know my name. She was thorough, don't get me wrong - just busy.
She measured my belly, felt for the baby, listened to the heartbeat (which was a whopping 156 beats per minute!) and then wiped off the doppler gel and was half way out the door... she did however have a second to look back to tell me that she'd see me again in 4 weeks... then every 2 weeks after that.... and every week in the last month. Oh, and she'll induce if I haven't gone into labour a week after my due date....
Ok, thanks have a great day.....WHAT??? Ok, maybe I'm being whiny (as I've been told)... but how can you toss something so important, like that comment, around so cavalier? I must have had a shocked face, because she paused at the door and asked if I had any questions. I just said, I'd like to avoid that if at all possible - unless medically necessary. She didn't answer me, and left... so I assume that meant the appointment was over.
I'm still adjusting to the idea... I mean, I have every right to refuse an induction (which I intend to do, if it comes to it, unless it's medically necessary for the baby to be born healthy).. I just can't believe that OB's are advertising that they induce pregnancies as a matter of procedure!!! Nature did just fine on it's own for centuries... I don't see any reason to change that!
